Laguna Seca Historics

This weekend was light on professional sports car racing action. But what the weekend lacked in pro racing; it made up with historic racing. Laguna Seca again hosted the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and I was there to see some of the best Porsche race cars from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. The Motorsports Reunion is a great addition to Monterey car week and PCA always attends this annual August event in force with a giant tent at turn five. The tent is a great viewing location and has live streaming race coverage from around the track on a large TV. Lunch and beverages also allow Porsche racing enthusiasts to hang out there all day. My favorite part of this event is always walking the paddock and seeing all my favorite Porsche racers in their original liveries. Everything from the Rothmans 956, Coca-Cola 962, Interscope 935 K3, Gulf 917K, John Paul JLP-3, Targa Floria 908/3, Momo 935, and more. This event definitely gets me excited for Rennsport Reunion next September … which everyone was talking about on Saturday.

Werks Reunion Monterey

Favorite cars from Werks Reunion in Monterey yesterday. The 1972 (1 of 11) Porsche 916 was a unicorn sighting. The 959 was very rare too. Great show, lots of Porsches.

Period correct?

Neighborhood 15-mile ride on the 1998 Porsche Bike S this morning. Cooler morning. Summer is winding down. Rode by a 2002 Porsche 986 Boxster along the route. Had to take a photo. A few years apart, but close to period correct Porsches.

Where are the other Porsche Bikes?

I estimate Porsche has produced somewhere around 12,000 to 14,000 bikes from 1996 to the present. These bikes are rather rare, yet quite a few were built. Riding the 1998 Bike S this morning to drop off a rented movie, I wondered if I’ll ever see another Porsche Bike in the wild. Not at a Porsche swap meet or with a Porsche Bike friend, but legitimately out and about with someone riding it. I have a feeling I never will. That’s too bad, but at the same time it makes these bikes even more exclusive than Porsche cars.

BWI loop thru the commercial district, again

Coca-Cola and Porsche seem to go well together. Like the DHL photo I took riding through the BWI commercial district, I had to do the same with Coke. DHL sponsored the ALMS Porsche RS Spyder team back in the 1990s. In the 1980s Coca-Cola sponsored the IMSA Porsche 962. Seemed only fitting to take a photo of the Coca-Cola trucks like I did at the DHL office across the street. The 2004 Porsche Bike X performed well on the 24-mile ride out to BWI airport and back home.

Friday morning ride and wash

Kicking off my weekend properly, I rode the 1998 Bike S 14 miles around my neighborhood before washing the bike and 2006 Cayenne S. Later today is Le Mans practice in the GT4. Rather good day planned, if I do say so.
